If “honesty, justice, a sense of duty and transparency are the essential pillars of a mature civil society” (Pope Francis in Malta, Meeting with the Authorities, Civil Society and the Diplomatic Corps), how is Malta doing on this score? Whilst everyone seems to agree that Malta needs to embrace these principles of good governance, the level of distrust and cynicism shown by people towards anything political seems to be increasing at an alarming level.
With Dr Lawrence Gonzi, former Prime Minister of Malta, and Dr Evarist Bartolo, former Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs, we discuss the complex reality of political life in Malta. Together with Mark Cachia from the Justice and Peace Commission they also speak about the urgent need to tackle the root causes of voter disillusion by undertaking the necessary institutional reforms coupled with a renewed emphasis on education in values and political participation.

When speaking in Ta’ Pinu, Pope Francis invited us to rediscover the essentials of our faith in a process of renewal of the life of the Church which is “never merely a past to remember but a great future to build”. With dwindling numbers and an ever-growing divide between Gospel values and the dominant culture, how can the local Church continue sharing the Good News with everyone and not just to a closed circle? Are we ready to leave our comfort zones and embark on risky and new paths of evangelization?

With Professor Nadia Delicata lecturer in Moral Theology at the University of Malta and Episcopal Delegate for Evangelisation and Dr Francois Mifsud, lecturer in the Department for Inclusion and Access to Learning at the University of Malta, we discuss the joys and challenges of being a Church in dialogue who gives witness by “kindling fires of tender love for those who know the pain and harshness of life”.

Notwithstanding an increased awareness about the unsustainability of our current economic model, radical change in the way we move, consume and build does not seem to be any nearer. The option of gently nudging people towards adopting more virtuous and sustainable lifestyles does not seem to be good enough. Might it be time to introduce economic “sticks” in the form for example of environmental taxes, which reflect the true cost of our self-inflicted environmental damage?

With Dr Maria Attard, Head of Geography and Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the University of Malta and Dr Marie Briguglio, lecturer at the University of Malta in Behavioural Economics and Environmental Economics, we speak about the urgent need to shift towards a more sustainable economic and social model. We also mention the responsibility of politicians to truly practice what they preach and about the links between social justice, environmental degradation and political participation.

Not a day goes by without reading an article on migration or overhearing a remark about the impact of migrants on Maltese society. The Pope himself, when visiting Malta, made it a point to meet migrants at the Ħal Far Peace Lab to express his solidarity and closeness to people on the move. But who exactly is a migrant? Has the number of people leaving their home country increased and do they find welcoming communities? Listen to our discussion with Dr Daniela Debono, lecturer in anthropology of migration at the University of Malta as we discuss displacement, the need to belong, and the reality of living during a tense age of both globalization and borders.

Pope Francis certainly did not beat around the bush when he addressed the authorities during his visit in Malta last April. In his speech he directly mentioned the numerous struggles that we are facing as a society; such as migration, good governance, peace and human dignity. How are these words relevant to not only the Roman Catholics in Malta, but also to the members of society who are working towards social justice?
In a discussion with Andre Callus and John Paul Cauchi, two members from the Graffitti Movement, we question whether it is time to come up with a different radical economic model - one that protects mankind and the world we live in, rather than leaving it crippled and destroyed.
We explore ways of building communities that are not overcome with the fear of those who are indifferent to us. With regards to youths, we discuss how we can use the tools at hand to be encouraged when facing upcoming difficulties, as together, we continue to discover alternatives to the economic systems that are currently neglecting many people.
